As evidenced by a wide variety of old school beach party flicks (1960s Frankie Valli though *swoon*), summer is an opportune time for romance. This year has been the first time in a while that the majority of my friends are single, and we have been encouraging each other to get back out in the dating world and just have some fun–with mixed results, of course (cue the unfortunate screenshots of salacious Tinder conversations, yikes). Throughout all of these exchanges and making plans to meet up, the question I always get asked the most as a fashion stylist is “WHAT SHOULD I WEAR ON OUR FIRST DATE???”
Now, that’s a pretty loaded question. To start, an outfit is 100% contingent on factors like weather, location, and planned activities (ever been bowling in a mini skirt? Not a fun time). There’s really no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, but I’ve rounded up some ideas below that offer up the right mix of comfort, pizzazz, and personality in order to make a good first impression, which are all easily tweaked depending on the conditions listed previously.
Denim is always the more relaxed choice for a date, because it’s breathable, durable, and effortless. You can show off your quirky personality with a statement bag or some unique pins for a great conversation starter. For added interest, you could throw on a bold, red lip and accessorize with a funky patterned tee or your favorite pair of Sailor Moon socks (everybody has those, right?). Overall, these options are versatile enough for anything from going to the movies to perusing the local bookstore or even staying in to play video games. If you want to play up the tomboy aspects, consider adding a snapback or layering with bomber jacket.
Escape the Day Midi Dress
Vacation Isles Dress
Pom Pom Beach Bag
Dinky Fringe Sandal
Glitz and Glam Sunglasses
Maybe for you, the ideal date is more chill, mainly consisting of walking along the Battery with an iced coffee or grabbing lunch on Folly Beach. Dresses, to me, are another optimum date staple, because they’re truly a one-and-done deal, and the patterns on the garments pictured above are visually appealing and are sure to garner many compliments from your date. Paired with some cute sandals, shades, and an oversized bag, this ensemble screams bohemian chic. A cute half braid or tousled waves would really accentuate the overall vibe.
We’ve all dreamt of going on that first date to a five-star restaurant, drinking champagne up to our eyeballs. Whether you’re sipping cocktails in a high-class lounge during happy hour or enjoying a three-course meal at a James Beard award-winning chef’s restaurant, the intricate details on both the romper and set are elegant enough to accommodate the dress code for the evening without breaking the bank. The added pops of color and texture in the accessories create multi-dimensional elements that make the outfit feel much more high-end but still practical and approachable. A dewy makeup look and neutral lip with soft curls would make this look even more fresh.
Regardless of whether the date in question is a possible soulmate or just a casual fling, make sure that above all else that you’re having a good time. Get you a bae who can treat you to all three of these scenarios, because you deserve it (and it gives you an excuse to wear all these outfits, just sayin’). And always remember, the most important accessory you can bring on any date is your sparkling personality.
