Of course the full line is “Look, Daddy. Teacher says, every time a bell rings an angel gets their wings.”- Zuzu Bailey. It is one of the best lines from “It’s a Wonderful Life”, in my humble opinion, and also one of my favorite movies to watch during the holiday season. It was made during the 40’s, which was the inspiration behind this holiday-inspired shoot. Andrea of Charleston Shop Curator and I got all decked out in retro holiday glam. Out of all the retro shoots I have done for Dandy I have never fully created one from this decade. The first order of business was creating those classic hair and make-up styles from the 40’s. Rosa of Rosa Martinez Hair and Make-up did an absolute wonder with our hair and I felt so glamorous and retro. So much so that I contemplated teaching myself how to create this style. Alas, that is a lot of work and I give mad props to the women of that era and the beautiful retro inspired ladies of today that wear that look consistently. The second order of business was the flawless make-up by Mariah of Pampered and Pretty. From the amazingly detailed cat eye to the pops of lip color, it made me feel like a classic 40’s leading lady. It’s crazy how that attention to detail can really transport you back in time. We wore some of Dandy’s best holiday pieces and instead of going for reds and greens, we went for icy blues and blush pink. The colors went really well together and the shimmer from my metallic midi complimented the sheen of Andrea’s velvet wrap dress. Of course this entire shoot only came to being after seeing this beautiful car. I thought what an amazingly classic car and it’s in Dandy colors, it’s meant to be! Erin and Brian of Sea Island Event Co. let us use this beauty and it really pulled the whole idea together. It was also my first time working with Nicole of N. Mickle Photography and all I can say is WOW, the way she captured the moment was more than I could have expected and the lighting is absolute perfection! Add a cobblestone street (easy to do in Charleston ) and some adorable cupcakes from Cupcake and our “Very 40’s Christmas” is complete! I have said it once and I will say it again, vintage style can transport you to a different time. It can add whimsy to your life and create a nostalgic reality, (or fantasy, however you tend to look at it), while also creating a classic suit of armor. No matter what decade I take myself back to I always get that same feeling. Maybe I am getting a little emotional as we move towards the closing of this year, but I really do enjoy bringing you these looks from the past decades. I hope it encourages you to enjoy fashion, take risks, and ultimately be yourself. As always I hope you have a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, and very Happy New Years!
