Hi, everyone! Let me start by introducing myself: My name is Kristen, but everybody calls me KiKi. I manage a style blog called Cats in My Closet and am launching a fashion magazine called Monachopsis in the fall. I also moonlight as a fashion stylist and, on occasion, have done some freelance writing, most notably for Charleston City Paper and Charleston Grit. Oh yeah, and I wear a lot of wigs.
I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with Holly & Dandy Boutique on several posts for my fashion website, and when she reached out to me about becoming a regular contributor for the Dandy blog, I absolutely leapt at the opportunity! On my way to the store to pick up outfits for my first post (a fairly quick walk from my office), I came to the realization that it’s incredulously hot outside. Like, nearly 100 degrees hot. When did that happen?!
Now I don’t know about the rest of you, but once the temperature creeps in the 90s, my main priority is trying to figure out how to wear as little clothing as possible while also avoiding sunburn. It’s all about ease and, most importantly, comfort, so I’ve showcased three effortless outfits below that are ideal for the steamy summer months.
Look 1: Sherbert Realness
Author’s note: I am wearing sizes XL for top, large for bottom. I would recommend sizing up.
This 60s-inspired look is serving some sherbert realness. The garments are made of a thin material, which is ideal for Charleston’s humid summers, and the fact that the items are paired as a matching set makes getting dressed SO EASY. I particularly love the raised ruffle collar of the A-line blouse. I paired the set with a black bag and shoes in order to keep the color palette balanced; alternatively, you could sport this look with a pair of lace-up sandals and a head scarf for a more beachy vibe.
Look 2: All Tied Up
Valfré Mara Dress (in-store)
Author’s note: I am wearing a size large. This style runs pretty small, so I recommend sizing up.
Valfré is one of my favorite vintage-inspired clothing labels, and I was so happy to find out that my favorite local store now carries their pieces in stock! Dresses are a summer staple of mine because I can show off some skin while also staying comfortable. I’m a fan of this dress in particular because of the detachable choker and tie-waist details. I decided to do a 90s x Royal Tenenbaums hybrid with my styling, but I could also see this dress going a bit more contemporary with some peep toe boots and statement earrings.
Look 3: Queen of the Disco
Author’s note: I am wearing a size medium. This item runs true to size.
The 70s are back in a big way. In the fashion world, this translates to bell sleeves, flare jeans, skinny ties, and JUMPSUITS! I inherited my love of jumpsuits from my mother, who rocked hers at the roller disco every Friday night in conjunction with her sweet afro. The pink number pictured above is made of a breathable cotton and features a pleated texture throughout with elaborate embroidery around the top. Jumpsuits are the best because it’s truly a one-and-done outfit, perfect for those lazy days when it’s just too hot to think about what to wear. The only downside? Going to the bathroom…(the things we do for style)
I hope I was able to provide some inspiration for dressing to accommodate Charleston’s scalding weather conditions. Even though it feels like the world outside is melting, at least your outfit will remain on point.
What are some of your favorite pieces to wear during the summer months? Tell us your warm-weather staples in the comments!
